Procedure for extracting your dashcam footage in the case of an Accident
Josh Sandford
In the unfortunate event of an accident, it is crucial to capture all evidence possible of the accident to help with your repair or insurance claim. This is particularly important if you are not the one at fault for the accident. One of the most useful pieces of evidence for supporting your insurance claim (if available) is dashcam footage. Below is a quick guide for how to extract the dashcam footage from your vehicle post an accident before it is towed away or no longer accessible.
1. Check Your Physical Condition
Ensure you are safe and uninjured.
If possible, remain at the accident site until authorities arrive. *if police has been called...
2. Save the Dashcam Footage
Many off the shelf or aftermarket dashcam's will be automatically recording and storing footage and just overwriting older footage each day. If you are driving a Tesla or you crash into a Tesla there are a couple of extra steps you need to follow to ensure you capture the footage.
Tap the Dashcam icon on the central touchscreen to save the last 10 minutes of footage.
Once you click in that icon, will appear saved on the top of the screen
3. Access the Memory Card
If you are using an off the shelf or aftermarket dashcam the memory card will be located on the device (usually on the side of the device).
If you are driving or crashed into a Tesla you can access the memory card through the glove compartment.
After saving the footage, wait approximately 10 seconds before removing the memory card to prevent data corruption.
*Please keep the memory card in a safe place. It is extremely important.
4. Save the footage to a computer and send to your insurer
Now you have extracted the memory card you should load it onto a computer and send the relevant video file of the accident to your insurer with your insurance claim form so it can help expedite their processing of your claim.
